Thanet Swimmers shine at White Cliffs The Dover Leisure Centre was the venue for the first Saturday of the 2006 White Cliffs Invitation Graded Meet hosted by Dover Life Guard Club and 49 swimmers from Thanet Swim Club competed in both Individual and Relay Team events, producing a Gold, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze Medals, 15 Top Six Finishes, 2 new Club Records and 47 Personal Best times.
In the stifling heat on Saturday, 10 year old Jake Davies, competing in the Boys 10/11 year age group made the final of the 50m Breaststroke as the second fastest qualifier and in the final itself he trailed at the 25m turn in 3 rd place but put in a scintillating last 25 metres to claim the Gold creating a new Personal Best of 44.01secs and setting a new Club Record in the process. Jake also claimed the 6 th place medal in the 100m Individual Medley. Another swimmer to set a new benchmark was 18 year old Nick Brown. In the Open 50m Freestyle, Nick set new Club Record for the open age group with a time of 27.33 in the qualifying round. Nick then went on to claim the Bronze Medal in the final with an identical time. 12 year old Emma Dray had a good day as she claimed her first medals in a Thanet cap. Emma qualified for the 12/13 year age group 50m Butterfly final having been ranked 8 th at the start and went on to claim the 6 th place medal in the final itself. Then in the second session of the day, Emma reached the final of the 12/13 year 50m Freestyle and went a step better when she came away with the Bronze Medal for her efforts. There was Double Silver for the 9 year olds in mixed team relay events. Jake Booth, Laura Craig, Billy-Ray Palmer and Grace White made the 4x25m mixed Medley Relay Final and then went 1.5 seconds faster to win the Silver Medal in the final. The team of Fergus Kenny, Kyri Papa Adams, Louisa March and Georgia Davey also qualified for the Medley Relay Final and did a 3 seconds improvement in the final to claim the 4 th place medals. The 9 year olds 4x25m mixed Freestyle team of Grace White, Laura Craig, Jake Booth and Billy-Ray Palmer qualified for the final and then produced a 2.5 second improvement in the final when they came from back in 5 th place on the last length to take the Silver Medal at the finish. The 9 year old team of Georgia Davey, Fergus Kenny, Molly Dawson and Kyri Papa Adams claimed their place in the Freestyle final and also improved by 2.5 seconds in the final to claim the 5 th place medals. 11 year old Cameron Larnach was desperately close to a podium finish in the 50m Freestyle when he claimed the 4 th place medal in the final. 10 year old Ben Pond claimed himself a 5 th place medal in the 10/11 year Boys 100m Individual Medley and 11 year old Thomas Walton earned a much deserved place in the 50m Breaststroke final where he won the 6 th place medal. In the 14/15 year Girls 100m Individual Medley, 14 year old Hannah Raven claimed the 5 th place medal in a new Personal Best and 15 year old Rebecca Kearney also made a new Personal Best as she gained the 6 th place medal. Rebecca went on to win the 1 st place cash prize in the skins competition. A total of 47 personal best times were achieved by Thomas Walton (3), Joshua Bradford (3), Marnie Holloway (3), Jake Davies (2), Philip Bullen (2), Nicholas Kearney (2), Charlie Frame Evans (2), Rosie Raven (2), Maisie Cope (2), Alice Cope (2), Amy Giles (2), Emma Dray (2), Lewis Cox (2), Jessica McDougall (2), Grace White (2), Louisa March (2), George Cook, James Cook, Mollie Raven, Molly Dawson, Alexandra White, Nathan Woodbridge, Leah Cunard, Elisha Kennett, Cameron Larnach, Rebecca Kearney, Hannah Raven and Grace Fright. Alice Cook, Rachel Cunard, Elliot Larnach, Leona Stretton, Dominic Matthews, Nicole Thompson, Ebony James, Owen Walton, Tyler Cox, Tyler Turner, Freya Bayne, Lucy McLeod, Lugain Rfidah, and Jake Benfield also had good performances.
