Seahawks Fly at Whitecliffs The Seahawks were out in force again as swimmers from Thanet Swim Club competed at the 2008 Dover Whitecliffs Open meet at the Dover Leisure Centre over the weekend. Traditionally the Dover meet is used as a first opportunity for many swimmers just starting out in the competitive side of the sport with swimmers as young a 8 years old having the opportunity to gain more experience. For the older swimmers too it is another chance to gain higher rankings as the season draws to a close. The Seahawks claimed 9 Gold, 11 Silver and 8 Bronze Medals, a further 20 finalists and recorded 90 Personal Best times including a new Club Record between the 33 swimmers competing. 15 year old Phillip Kearney led the way making the podium in all four of his events. Phillip was a Double Gold Medallist, winning the finals of both the 50m Freestyle (27.47secs PB) and the 50m Breaststroke (34.63 PB). Phillip then claimed the Silver Medal in the 50m Backstroke (34.36 PB) final and the Bronze Medal in the 50m Butterfly (32.51 PB) final. Rebecca Kearney (17) kept the family celebrations going with another three podium finishes. Rebecca was also a Double Gold Medallist as she won both the 100m Individual Medley (1min 15.00secs PB) and the 50m Butterfly (33.11). Rebecca climbed onto the podium for a third time when she won the Silver Medal in the 50m Freestyle (30.78). Sophie Morgan (14) was a medallist in all five of her events at the weekend and claimed a podium spot in three of them. Sophie reached the top of the podium when she won the Gold Medal in the 50m Freestyle (30.90 PB) and won the Silver Medal in the 50m Butterfly (35.45 PB). Her final podium spot was winning the Bronze Medal in the 50m Breaststroke (42.22 PB). Aaron Clements (14) made the finals in all four of his events topped by his Gold Medal win in the 50m Butterfly (32.06 PB). Aaron then won the Silver Medal in the 50m Backstroke (34.85 PB) and completed his haul by winning the Bronze Medal in the 50m Breaststroke (38.13 PB). Alexander Wilmshurst (9) made his way through to two finals and made them both count. Alexander hit the top of the podium in the 50m Breaststroke to claim the Gold Medal (49.65 PB) and then won the Silver Medal in the 50m Backstroke (44.76 PB). Teammate and fellow 9 year old Gabe Drew also made the top of the podium when he won the Gold Medal in the final of the 50m Freestyle (37.98 PB). Libby Henson (13) made her only event at the weekend count as she claimed a top spot on the podium when she won the Gold Medal in the 100m Individual Medley (1min 14.53secs PB). Jamie O'Connor (8) won the Silver Medal in the 50m Freestyle (38.53 PB) and also recorded a new 8 year boys Club Record with his performance in the 50m Butterfly (44.54 PB), claiming 4 th place in the final. Daniel Jones (9) won the Silver Medal in the final of the 50m Butterfly setting a new personal best time (43.42) showing an 8 second improvement. Another 9 year old, Juliet Landeman also won a Silver Medal with a 4 second improvement to claim the podium spot in the 50m Breaststroke final (48.23). Marnie Holloway (12) claimed herself a podium spot when she won the Silver Medal in the final of the 50m Freestyle (31.28 PB). In the relay events, the Junior Seahawks produced some more great performance when the Thanet 9/under mixed relay team of Juliet Landeman , Courtney Bowyer , Daniel Jones and Harry Bradford won the Silver Medal in both the finals of the Freestyle (1min 11.83secs) and the Medley (1min 20.39secs) relays events. Harry Bradford (9) was a Double Bronze Medal winner when he claimed third place in both the 50m Freestyle final (38.63 PB) and the 50m Butterfly final (43.84 PB) having also made it through to the finals of the 50m Breaststroke and Backstroke events. Joshua Dunk (10) won the Bronze Medal in the final of the 50m Butterfly (38.74 PB) and Oliver Barton (10) claimed the Bronze Medal in the final of the 50m Freestyle (33.50 PB) while Jake Davies (12) also won a Bronze Medal with his coming in the 100m Individual Medley (1min 15.74 PB), shaving 4 seconds off his PB. A Further 20 final places were achieved over the weekend. 4 th Place Final medallists were Harry Bradford (9) - 2 finals – 50m Breaststroke and 50m Backstroke, Jamie O'Connor (8) – 50m Butterfly New CR, Joshua Dunk (10) – 50m Breaststroke, Juliet Landeman (9) – 50m Freestyle, Nicholas Kearney (13) – 50m Breaststroke, Oliver Barton (10) – 50m Butterfly, Rebecca Kearney (17) – 50m Breaststroke, Thanet 11/under Mixed Freestyle Relay Team (Molly Dawson, Ebony James, Oliver Barton and Dominic Matthews) and Thanet 13/under Mixed Freestyle Relay Team (Maisie Cope, Marnie Holloway, Alex Kirkpatrick and Nicholas Kearney). 5 th Place Final medallists were Aaron Clements (14) – 50m Freestyle, Daniel Jones (9) – 50m Breaststroke, Jamie O'Connor (8) – 50m Backstroke and Sophie Morgan (14) – 50m Backstroke. 6 th Place Final medallists were Alice Cook (16) – 50m Freestyle, Gabe Drew (9) – 50m Backstroke, Nicholas Kearney (13) – 50m Backstroke, Oliver Barton (10) – 100m Individual Medley, Sophie Morgan (14) – 100m Individual Medley and Thanet 13/under Mixed Medley Relay Team (Maisie Cope, Marnie Holloway, Alex Kirkpatrick and Nicholas Kearney).
