Thanet Swim Club Masters competed at the East Invicta ASA Masters Championships 2006 at the Kings School swimming pool in Canterbury and surpassed all their expectations with an impressive 4 th place overall finish. The Championships produced flurry of medals for the Thanet Swim Club members as they came away with 10 Gold, 7 Silver and 2 Bronze Medals from just 21 swims, achieving 13 Personal Best times. 73 year old Derrick Fuller made a clean sweep of his four events winning the Gold Medal in all of them. Swimming in the 70-74 years group, Derrick won the 50m Butterfly, 50m Breaststroke, 50m Freestyle and finally the 100m Individual Medley in which he recorded a fantastic new personal best time. Competing in the 30-34 year group, Banu Ercon was also a quadruple Gold Medallist. Banu won the 50m Backstroke, the 100m Freestyle, the 50m Butterfly in a new personal best time and the 100m Individual Medley. In the 35-39 year group, Michelle Jacobs recorded new personal best times in all five of her event. Michelle won the Gold in the 50m Backstroke and followed that with a further 4 Silver medals. Michelle won the Silver Medal in the 100m Freestyle, the 50m Breaststroke, the 50m Freestyle and the 100m Individual Medley. Cathy MaCartney faced some tough races in her group and her first race, the 100m Freestyle, came out on top winning the Gold Medal in the 40-44 year group. Cathy faced stiff opposition, in particular from Hythe, in her other two races but both times came in to win the Silver Medal in both the 50m Butterfly and the 100m Individual Medley. Angela Drew-Robinson had a great day to remember as she created new personal best times in all four of her events. Highlight of the day for Angela was winning her Silver Medley in the 50m Backstroke in the 45-49 year group. Angela also had a 4 th place finish in the 100m Freestyle and a 5 th place finish in the 50m Freestyle. The Ladies teamed up for the first time to enter the 120 year group 4x50m relays and Angela Drew-Robinson, Cathy MaCartney, Michelle Jacobs and Banu Ercon won the Bronze Medal in both the Freestyle and Medley Relays. Masters swimming is designed for adults from 19 years and above and covers a wide range of ability from just casual, fitness swimming right through to organised Masters competition swimming which don't usually need any qualifying standard, so if you wish to enter competitions you can simply join a club and send in your entry. Thanet Swim Club Masters sessions are held on Monday evenings and Thursday mornings at Hartsdown Leisure Centre.
